Yoga,
meaning union in Sanskrit, is a family of ancient
spiritual practices that originated in India.
Yoga, as a means to enlightenment, is central
to Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. Karma, Bhakti,
Jnana and Raja are considered the four main yogas,
but there are many other types. In the west,
yoga has become associated with the asanas (postures)
of Hatha Yoga, which are popularly considered
as fitness exercises.
At
Dragon and Crane we combine Hatha Yoga for fitness
with some of the more traditional yoga forms
to complete the spiritual aspect of this art.
In addition, we offer a “Gentle
Yoga” which uses a blend of techniques
from various styles of Hatha Yoga. These classes,
suitable for beginner or intermediate levels,
encourage students to listen to their own body
while achieving the goal of relaxation, flexibility
and strength.
Currently teaching at the Katonah Yoga Centerwhere
she started her practice and received a teaching
certificate, Beth
Mendoza is experienced in the teachings in
both lyengar and Hatha styles of Yoga. The Iyengar
format uses props to help support the asana for
proper format and longer duration. Hatha
yoga is a more restorative and forgiving practice.
The combination of both is a nice balance. In
additions to her studies in lyengar and Hatha,
Beth has also practiced Bikram, Vinyasa and Ashtanga
styles.
